Tongkatali.org's Avoiding trouble

By Serge Kreutz

If you have plenty of relationships relationships (mind you: not with prostitutes), then this is enough of a challenge to stay out of trouble. You definitely do not want to run any additional risk of trouble, not related to your relationships conduct.

With plenty of relationships relationships, to stay out of trouble is a challenge because you frequently will have to deal with possessive and jealous women or girls, and sooner or later with rejected local boyfriends, or elder brothers, or angry fathers.

Arguments with neighbors about rubbish disposal or loud music, or with a landlord about the replacement of a telephone set, or with road traffic participants about the right of way at an intersection are all not worth the benefits a winner may take.

Sure, I get mad at reckless drivers. But I calm myself down by telling myself that I may already have fucked, or may do so sometime in the future, his daughter.

I have a proven recipe for staying out of business disputes: only be a buyer in transactions with locals.

When I first settled in Asia, I tried selling to locals. Profit margins are meager, and everybody tries to take advantage from a foreigner who doesn’t know the rules, and is unlikely to react violently. And if you were to discover a profitable niche, you’d soon have native competitors who’ll claim that this is their turf.

On the other hand, buyers are always welcome, and local sellers will even provide a certain amount of protection. For you as a foreigner in Asia, the income will have to be generated either from other foreigners who visit your location, or it will have to come from rich countries abroad.

Nowadays, the Internet makes such a strategy easy. In the early 80’s my only options were reporting for German newspapers and magazines, and writing travel guides. Others who understood that their income could not come from locals opened restaurants to cater for visitors from their own countries, or opened export / import companies.

Other measures for staying out of trouble are more personal. For example, it is best to avoid all contact with local children. Even a fatherly approach to your neighbors children, or towards children in public places, could be wrongly interpreted. Children anywhere in the world are very, very unreliable witnesses. Children are extremely open to suggestions on what to relate, and even on what to remember. Furthermore, as a foreigner, you have a severe language handicap. This, together with suggestive interrogation of kids, could easily lead to a situation in which severe misdeeds on your part are construed.

There is no benefit to have children sitting on your lap, or in comforting crying little girls. Let relatives or locals do this, and keep your distance.

I definitely advise against entering into a live-in relationships relationship or a marriage with a local woman with a child or children for whom you become a substitute father or the stepfather. Stepfathers are always at fault when children don’t get what they want, and if the relationship with your partner (their mother) turns sour, the revenge-minded woman may look for a reason to get you into prison or onto the electric chair (or whatever the local mode of execution). Claiming relationships misconduct towards children is ideal for such evil plans because the opposite truth is hard to prove when the mother and the child cooperate in accusing you, and because the potential punishment is severe.

Furthermore, such a case would cause substantial public interest. Tabloids profit from it because nothing sells like the alleged relationships misconduct of foreign men. Practically all local men are against you because you have an edge competing for local women, and they a competitor out of the way, regardless of whether he has committed a crime or not. Furthermore, any high-profile legal prosecution has a deterring effect on other foreign men who may want to compete for local women, and thus plays into the hands of local men. Men and women in many Third World countries are street-smart to a higher degree than people in rich countries, and therefore, they have a well-developed sense for what benefits them and what doesn’t.

Even Western child-protection activists and Christian zealots, male and female, will reckon that any well-published court case against foreigners accused of relationships misconduct will serve as a warning to other men, not just to keep their hands from local children, but not to pursue relationships gratifications in that location at all.

But in spite of a clear policy to keep your distance from local children, you may sooner or later be confronted with trumped up rape charges. False rape accusations towards foreigners are common, as they are a perfect scheme to extract huge "compensation" payments. Many foreigners accused in this manner will pay up as much as they can afford, rather than expose themselves to a trial, even when they feel confident that they could prove their innocence.

Apart from that, judicial proceedings are a waste of time, and lawyers are expensive. And as long as you have money to spend, and they have services to sell, lawyers have a vital interest in that you are in trouble. For only people in legal trouble need lawyers.

Last not least, foreigners will pay up to get even false rape charges from the table, just to stay out of tabloids and local crime television.

The above considerations regarding false rape charges are not my discovery, and they don’t require much criminal intelligence on the part of locals. Comparative schemes are unfolded elaborately in local TV soaps, and regularly discussed in circles of cash-strapped girls, especially in the Philippines and Indonesia.

If you have a talent for modern technologies, it may pay off mightily to install some James Bond gear for secret sound and video recordings.

Less dramatic (because non-relationships) situations:

If you drive a car, definitely, on country roads, don’t stop because an apparently injured person lies at the roadside. The risk is too great that this is just a trap, and that after you got off your car, it may be driven away by someone appearing from behind a tree, or you may be robbed by a local gang.

You are not needed at road accidents, so, unless you have caused one, just drive on. Avoid offering help, especially if you are the first at the scene. To locals it is often obvious that damages would most easily be obtained from you, so it makes sense to blame you for having caused the accident, even if you have only arrived after it happened. Let locals take care of the aftermath of their road accidents, from providing first aid to determining who is guilty.

In some countries, such as Indonesia, beating up drivers who have caused harm to people, especially children, is common. It can even happen that the car and the driver are sprayed with gasoline and set afire. While this is frightening, it may not always be the best idea to try to escape. To escape will only make sense if you have an unobstructed road ahead (which isn’t the case often on Indonesian Java); if you try to escape and if you are forced to stop by other vehicles ahead of you, it is all the more likely that you will be lynched.

I don’t mean to give your dreams about Asia a cold shower. But the more aware you are about the potential for trouble, the less likely you will find yourself in hot water.
